Today I am starting to use a metronome. I’ve seen enough YouTube videos now where they say you really should be doing *everything* to a quantized beat. Especially beginners.
So today marks the date. I start today.
I did an hour of left hand quarter note strokes at 60 bpm. I think that’s about as fast as I can go right now and keep it steady for long streaks.
The other thing I notice is that I practiced for longer stretches at a time. When I was practicing strokes without a metronome, I could cycle between doing them fast and then taking a break and doing a slow period. But a consistent tempo kept me going at it longer.
And finally, I like that I can then measure my progress better. Someday, for example, I’ll be able to do 65 bpm. And I’ll now how many weeks it took me to get there or how long I have plateaued etc.
So, all hail the metronome.
Or should it be metrognome? I’m envisioning a little spirit creature, but dressed with modern sensibilities.
