10,000 Kicks Per Day

Last night I practiced the kick drum exercise I learned a few days ago. I did it for a whopping 6.5 minutes at 70 bpm. I say “whopping” because it’s more than I’ve ever done and it felt like a really long time. It felt like I did it for 20 minutes…

I was surprised I could keep it up that long without serious degradation in accuracy like the first time I did the exercise, which was only a few days ago. When it ended I thought, “Hey, I’m getting my 10,000 steps in”. Then it occurred to me that since I played to a metronome, we actually can calculate the total number of kicks. I only kicked on beats 1 and 3, that’s half of the bpm as “kicked beats per minute”. Times 4 kicks per beat(16ths), times 6.5 minutes we get:

35 * 4 kpm * 6.5 minutes = 910 kicks

It does seem conceivable that I could reach 10,000 in a day. Perhaps soon. It’s a worthy goal…
