Focus Focus Focus

Man I am really prone to distraction, especially when given infinite choices. Give me a room filled art supplies and I can’t do anything. But give me two colors and tell me I have to paint a mountain of another planet using just those two colors and suddenly everything is ok. I can make something under those circumstances.

I’ve struggled with this forever and it’s only gotten worse with more and more ways to do things digitally. Ableton for example is a bottomless well of sound design. I get lost forever in the bottomless well of sound design. All the options also make it impossible for me to even learn it.

So. I’m going to focus. I’m creating a limitation. I’ve asked myself, “What is the most useful and important thing for me to know and do well using Ableton?”. And the answer I come up with is this: I want to be able to record live loop improvisations using the Push 2. This is what I’m going to try to do. Get good at this little sliver of production abilities.

And here’s today’s looping session. A whimsical Pink Panther inspired bit.

I’m really pleased with successfully navigating the Push to trigger the recordings, trim the clips, and even adding a New Track on the fly WITHOUT using my mouse and keyboard. It’s a joy to play standing up and have the large device with physical buttons and knobs.
