This post is a riff on the classic homework assignments young students do when returning to school. That’s probably pretty obvious, but hey, they don’t call me me Captain Obvious for reasons unknown.
First off, I had a blog post with a list of goals for August that turned out so off the mark it’s embarrassing and I had to delete it. The reality is, I spent a lot of my free time immersed in a video game. The last three weeks anyways.
It was No Man’s Sky. A beautiful, open sandbox, space exploration game. It’s pretty typical of me that when I get the itch to play a game, I play it to completion. I try to do 100% of the content, and achieve all the trophies available. I also like to achieve some escapism and immersion. I’ll return back to the planet I actually live on soon. It’s already started happening.
Anyways, I also switched from Xbox to Steam. I had the brilliant idea of taking an unused Steamdeck we have in the house, plugging it into the living room TV screen, and using it with a console controller from my couch. I’m all about being relaxed when I play games. I don’t want to be slumped over at my desk playing on a PC. And I say this as one of the OG PC gamers. Installing, configuring, and playing games on 386 computers (and later Pentiums) helped me launch a career out of computers.
I was also pushed towards Steam because I’m still salty about the Xbox price hike last year. Once I cancelled that, I soon realized that you can’t play multiplayer games without it. Turns out the subscription is not just being given free access to some games every month, it’s what made it a functioning console.
And finally, I’m two months now without drinking coffee! I sleep much better and love waking up in the morning not being beholden to something. I just get up and start my day. Saves me time and makes me feel so much better about myself.
The heat of summer is behind us. I look forward to the fall…
