Almond and Soy Milk are Lowkey Tums

Recently I learned that Tums is calcium carbonate. One tablet is 1000mg.

I was looking at the ingredients of soy milk and noticed one cup has 325mg of calcium carbonate. Three cups would equal one Tums, or one cup makes a lowkey Tums.

Interesting.

I had a memory of working in a Plant Pathology lab in college as a lab assistant. On of my duties was to make fungal nutrient media from V8 juice. Aside from V8 and agar, the other ingredient was calcium carbonate.

And I’ve found out from learning about reflux, is that all canned products like V8 are acidic. This was mandated by the FDA in 1979 to prevent botulism.

Anyways, we added calcium carbonate to the V8 to make it more palatable to the organisms we were studying. We weren’t meant to always be eating acidic things.

It does make me wonder what it would taste like to adjust tomato sauce to a neutral pH.
