Man, I am so pumped. I just learned that chili peppers can live all year long ( if they don’t freeze ). Growing hot peppers has become my absolute favorite thing about gardening. I never seem to know what to do with other vegetables when they ripen. It seems weird to me. Like, here’s a bunch of tomatoes today. Go do something with all of them. Hurry!
But I ALWAYS have something to do with a chili pepper. Put it in just about everything.
Every fall though, my pepper plants would appear to die. But I just learned they actually the grow all year long! I have to thank the YouTube algorithm for that one. And in those videos, the pepper plants people have are enormous compared to mine. I suppose that’s what happens when you keep them growing.
It turns out I’d been letting mine die through neglect. At the end of the growing season I just assumed they all died so I stop taking care of them.
I was slightly disappointed to learn about this in September, because I had just let my pepper plants die. So this weekend I popped into my local hardware store… and to my great surprise, they still carried them as starts! I was able to buy 5 different varieties.
- Habanero
- Poblano
- Serrano
- Ghost
- Jalapeno
And so here they are. Felt so odd planting a garden in September with the same enthusiasm I have for gardening in the spring…
