Obsessing Over Osteoporosis

Getting an osteoporosis diagnosis has sent me over the edge and straight down the rabbit hole.

I’ve doing the Acid Watcher Diet, which mostly the same as Dr Jamie Koufman’s Reflux Detox Diet. I’m on Day 5 and my mindset has already well shifted into what’s ok to eat and what is not. And I’ve been obsessively strict about it. Hell, I even quit coffee!

I was hanging out with a friend and saw him with a big ol’ pizza and beer, at 7pm. He offered me some but all I could think was, “Man there are so many things wrong with that. I can’t even”.

I told another friend that story, who also has GERD, and he said, “I’d probably not refuse pizza and instead just medicate later and hope for the best”.

It reminded me just how freakishly serious I am being about this.

Another thing I have been obsessing over is binge watching Dr Jamie Koufman’s YouTube Channel. In today’s session she said something like, “Don’t rely on sites like WebMD. If you want to really know things, use PubMD. Read the latest peer reviewed research”.

So I did just that, and searched the keywords “omeprazole osteoporosis”, sorted by most recent, and there was a paper that was just published in 2026, titled Impact of PPI Therapy on Bone Mineral Density. I clicked on it and what I saw shocked me!

Ten studies (71%) found significant BMD reductions among PPI users, particularly at the hip and femoral neck… Longer PPI therapy (>1 year) and higher doses were associated with greater BMD reductions…

And that right there is describing me: 6 years of a high dose and bone density loss.

I’m beside myself. When I asked my doctor if my bone loss could be from Omeprazole she said, “There is no data to support that PPIs affect bone density”.

For all I know, there may be something wrong with this study. I don’t know and I wont ever know because I’m not going to read the whole thing and try to understand it. Ain’t nobody got time for that. (Ok, maybe I’m not THAT serious about it).

But what I know is that there is in fact at least one peer reviewed published paper that hints of a connection to osteoporosis.

All my labs are normal, this is the only medication I take, and I’ve been on a high dose for 6 years.

It’s time to quit.
