Joined my local walking/running club today downtown hoping to practice some more extroversion. I turned out to be the only walker, everyone else was running. I decided to walk around anyways by myself. Not but a few blocks later I see someone across the street wearing an MTV shirt. I pointed at him directly and shouted, I like your shirt man! That is NOT something I ever would have done before. As I crossed, we then struck up a conversation about the glory days of music television. I was wearing my Ableton shirt so it wasn’t long before we talked about music in general. Turns out he’s a DJ and I told him I like to do open mics. I asked when his next gig was and that I’d come check it out. He asked me when the next open mic was and that he’d come check that out too.
It really is amazing. I’ve never acted like this before. I’m definitely becoming a changed person. It’s a wild thought that I would just strike up conversations with random people wherever I go. This has never been in my wheelhouse. Never.
I wish I had learned this skill when I was a lot younger and I hope at least this can rub off on my son who is literally a clone of my younger, introverted self.
UPDATE: I went outside to put away the garbage cans and my neighbor across the street came out to introduce herself. Is it possible I’m putting out the social vibes now? Because I’ve lived here 5 years and I’ve never met her! Seems like a wild coincidence. She also mentioned that she hears my drumming and that she likes it because her brother was a drummer and she grew up learning to fall asleep to that sounds. My luck continues…
UPDATE 2:
- A friend of mine reached out with an extra ticket to the Violent Femmes concert! Unfortunately I can’t go due to my spouse recovering from knee replacement surgery.
- Another friend reached out to me and invited me to a protest.
Again man, this is pretty wild stuff. What luck to get offered a free concert ticket!
